Week 48: Lemon Squares

For the vintage theme, I decided to pick a recipes from my grandmother's recipe books I inherited. I looked for recipes that she had marked with notes and/or checkmarks. I ended up picking one from the Albertina's cookbook. Albertina Kerr is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit human services providers in the Pacific Northwest. The picture below is a note from the front of the cookbook:

I chose the lemon bar recipe because it had a check mark, seemed simple, and would be an easy thing to bring to the tailgate we were going to (spoiler alert: I forgot to bring them out of the car during the tailgate 🤦🏽♀️).
I don't often cook out of recipe books because I like to look through comments on recipes to bypass any issues, but this seemed like a simple enough recipe that I wouldn't have any problems. The tops of my lemon squares got a bit brown in the oven, but other than that it went okay. When it came time to slice I could not for the life of my figure out how the recipe stated it would make 20-24 squares. I mean I know older recipes probably have smaller portion sizes based on the diets of that time, but sheesh! If I would have cut them in 24 square they would have been the size of a quarter or smaller!
These ended up tasting okay, but not great. I'm wondering if I maybe over whipped the eggs. The crust was a bit dense too. I don't think I'd make them again, but I think I may try some of the other checked off recipes just for nostalgia reasons.
